How to get more wishlists on Steam

Start with the page, not the promotion

Reddit posts, streamers, festivals and ads all send people to the same place: your store page. If the page doesn't convert, every bit of marketing leaks. So fix the page first, then send traffic to it. Chris Zukowski's Next Fest analysis found that most wishlists gained during the festival came from people who never played the demo. They wishlisted from the capsule, screenshots and description.

The 6-point page checklist

  1. Capsule readable at 120×45, with one focal point and the genre obvious. See our capsule art guide.
  2. Short description leads with genre and hook and uses concrete verbs. See our short description guide.
  3. First 4 screenshots show 4 distinct parts of your core loop, including genre-revealing UI. These 4 cycle in the hover tooltip shoppers see on the Steam homepage.
  4. Gameplay-first trailer listed first, with action in the first 3–5 seconds and no long logo intros. Steam builds its hover micro-trailer from it. Keep it to one or two videos so screenshots stay visible.
  5. Specific tags in your top 5: sub-genres like "Roguelike Deckbuilder" or "Cozy", with filler like "Indie" pushed down. Tags decide which "more like this" rows you appear in.
  6. Scannable About section: features first, short headers, GIFs.

Then add wishlist events

  • Put your Coming Soon page up early so wishlists build over months, not weeks.
  • Release a demo and plan around Steam Next Fest (check dates on Steamworks). Steam features demos heavily during the festival.
  • Smaller genre festivals and curated events spread visibility over the year.
  • Streamers and YouTubers in your genre, especially once a demo is out.
  • Regular devlogs and clips on X, Bluesky, Discord and Reddit. Individually they're lottery tickets, but together they keep a steady trickle coming.

Measure, change one thing, repeat

Use Steamworks traffic and wishlist reports to track impressions, click-through and visit-to-wishlist conversion. Change one element at a time, such as a new capsule or a re-ordered first screenshot, and give it a week or two of traffic before judging it.
