How Steam tags work

You can apply up to 20 tags to your game in Steamworks, and players can vote tags too. Steam uses them to decide which shoppers see your game and which games you appear next to, and the most-applied tags show first on your page. Valve explains the system in its Steamworks tags docs.

What counts as a filler tag?

Tags like Indie, Casual, Singleplayer, Atmospheric or Great Soundtrack apply to thousands of games, so they don't tell Steam who your game is for. They're fine lower down, but your top 5 should be specific sub-genres and themes, such as Roguelike Deckbuilder, Farming Sim or Metroidvania, that put you next to the right games.

Only use accurate tags

Tagging a game as something it isn't brings the wrong players, lowers conversion and can earn bad reviews. Our suggestions are starting points; keep only the ones that truly describe your game.
