300 characters. Valve's Steamworks description docs only say it's "limited to a few hundred characters"; the character counter in the Steamworks store page editor enforces 300. It's plain text, with no formatting.
Where the short description shows up
It sits at the top of your store page, next to your capsule, tags and release date, so almost every visitor reads it. Steam also uses it as the page's meta description and in link previews on Discord and social media.
What makes a good one
- Name the genre and hook in the first sentence: "A cozy farming sim where you…"
- Use concrete verbs for what the player does, not lore or mood.
- Cut buzzwords like "unique", "immersive" and "journey".
- Mention one real differentiator: a mechanic, a setting, a number.
